いのちの平等

仏典の数ある説話に「全てのいのちは平等である」ということを示す物語があります。

ある国に、シビ王という心優しい王さまがいました。その王さまのところに、鷹に傷つけられ追われた鳩が飛び込んで来て「助けて下さい」と命ごいをしたのです。「今治療してあげよう」と治療し始めると、そこへ鷹が飛んできて、王さまに「私は数日間何も食べずに腹が減っている。この鳩を食べないと死んでしまう。だからその鳩をくれ」と命ごいをしたのです。そして「あなたは鳩と鷹、どちらが大事だと思っているのか」と、王さまを困らせました。

そこで王さまは「鳩と同じだけの私の肉を差し出す」と言い、どちらのいのちをも助けるため、天秤ばかりを用意したのです。片方に傷ついた鳩を乗せ、鳩と同じ重さの自分の肉を切り取って反対側に置いたのです。しかし、どれだけ王さまの肉を切り取って増やし置いてみても、鳩の方が重く示し、つり合わないのです。そこで王さまは自分の体ごと天秤に乗ったのです。すると、王様のいのちと、鳩のいのちがつり合ったのです。このことから、地位や名誉、財産をも持ち得ている王さまと鳩のいのちは平等であると教えるのです。

自らのいのちを犠牲にして与え、鳩のいのちも鷹のいのちも救うことができた王さまは、やがてお釈迦様に生まれ変わったという物語です。 最近は、胆振管内で致死率の高い鳥インフルエンザを確認し、鶏約５２万羽の殺処分が行なわれました。ロシアのウクライナ侵攻によって、数知れない犠牲者が増え続けています。また、知床観光船の沈没事故で大切ないのちが犠牲になっています。本来、あってはならないあり方をしていると言えるのではないでしょうか。お互いの、いのちを大切にする社会になってほしいものです。

Equality of lives

Amongst many Buddhist tales, there is a story about how all lives are equal.
There was a gentle hearted king called Sibka in a country.
A pigeon injured by an eagle flew into him and asked for his life to be saved.
"I'll take a look at your injury."
King Sibka began to treat the pigeon.
The eagle flew in and pleaded "I haven't eaten anything for several days and am starving.
If I don't eat this pigeon, I will die. Give me that pigeon."
He asked the king a difficult question, "Which life do you think is more valuable, a pigeon's or an eagle's?"
The king said, "I'll give you as much of my own flesh as the pigeon's."
He tried to save both lives and brought in a scale.
He put the injured pigeon on one side and cut off the same amount of his own flesh on the other.
No matter how much of his flesh he cut off to place on the scale, the pigeon side was heavier and would not balance.
The king eventually got on the scale himself.
Finally, the balance became equal with the life of the king and the life of the pigeon.
This story teaches the life of the king with his status, honor and wealth and that of the pigeon are equal.
All lives are equal.
The story says the king sacrificed his own life to save both lives of the pigeon and the eagle reincarnated into become Shakamuni Buddha.
Recently, a lethal bird flu was discovered in Iburi district in Hokkaido. 520,000 poultries were killed.
There are many victims as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
There were 26 people lost when the tourist boat sank in Shiretoko.
These things happened due to things that should never have been done were done or things that should have been done were not done.
We pray for a society that values each other's lives.
