永代経のこころ　〜繋ぐご縁〜

永代経という言葉をよく耳にすることがあります。お寺では春と秋に永代経法要として勤まります。この永代経という言葉、世間では永代供養という意味で、亡き方やご先祖を供養するためにお経を称える法要と認識されていることもありますが、浄土真宗では「永代読経」といい、永代にわたってお経に説かれている阿弥陀様のみ教えが伝わっていくようにと勤まる法要です。

一般的に「供養」という言葉は亡き方に対して使われ「供(そな)え養(やしな)う」と書きます。しかし、浄土真宗では亡き方を養うためにお経を供えるということはしません。

お経というのはお釈迦様がお説き下さったものです。誰に向かって説かれたものかというと当時のお弟子方です。つまり、亡くなった方ではなく生きている人に向かって説かれているのです。「なにがあっても決してあなたを見捨てはしない、必ず救う」という阿弥陀様のお心をお説き下さいました。この私に向けられた阿弥陀様のお心、すなわち仏となられた亡き方のお心を聞かせていただくことによって、永代供養として亡き方やご先祖のためにと思っていたお経が、実は私自身がお経によって養われ、育てられている、亡き方を願うためではなく願われている私に向けられたものだったのだと気づかされます。

親鸞聖人は『教行信証』に、「前に生まれるものは後のものを導き、後に生まれるものは前のもののあとを尋ね、果てしなくつらなって途切れることのないように」と示されています。

お釈迦様がお説き下さったみ教えが、お弟子方を始まりに２５００年以上たった今でも途切れることなく伝わり、今私に至り届いている。そして、そのご縁に導いてくれたのがご先祖であります。永代経法要をご縁として、導かれたお念仏の道を私も歩み、そして、今度はこの私が前のものに尋ねたみ教えを子や孫へと伝えていく、長きにわたり、代々伝えられてきた阿弥陀様のお心をお念仏の道の中で感謝をさせていただきましょう。

Eitaikyo Memorial Service(Perpetual Sutra Memorial Service)

At Fukujuji Temple, we hold Eitaikyo Memorial Service twice a year in Spring and Autumn.This tradition, which started in Japan’s Edo Period, hundreds of years ago, also is a way for people who live far away to observe a service for their families, listen to the Dharma, and make offerings to help keep the temple and Buddha’s Teachings alive “perpetually.”

Eitaikyo means to Anivestral Memorial Service and we chant to honor the deceased ancestors.Called Eitai Dokyo in Jodo Shinshu, it is a service that hopes to continue the Teaching of Amida Buddha in eternity.In Jodo Shinshu, Eitaikyo is a memorial service held to chant in honor of the ancestors that are held at anniversary of the deceased's death or at Spring and Autumn Equinox. The following is what Shakyamuni Buddha taught his deciples. Buddhist chanting describes Amida Buddha's promise that he will save you and never abandon you.What Shakyamuni Buddha taught 2500 years ago is still reaching us today.

Shinran Shonin wrote in his Kyogyoshinsho*, "Those who are born earlier will lead those who follow. Those who are born later will seek the predecessor's path."* Kyogyoshinsho: On Teaching, Practice, Faith, and EnlightenmentWhat really is the wonderous power in "go-en"?I believe that at the base, everything is connected. Everything has a cause and go-en then make things happen.When we meet people, there are countless factors that are inter-related to make it happen.In other words, even if just one of those factors was lacking that encounter may have been different of you may not have met at all.

Let us treat Eitakyo Memorial Service as our 'go-en' and recite nembutsu and thank Amida Buddha that has been passed on to us by our ancestors.
