【花まつり】〜かけがえのないもの〜

今から約2500年前の４月８日にネパール、ルンビニーの花園でお釈迦様がご誕生になりました。「灌仏会」(花まつり)は、お釈迦様のご誕生をお祝いする大切な行事です。

伝記によりますと、お釈迦様は生まれられるとすぐに自らの足で七歩歩き「天上天下唯我独尊」と言われ、空からは甘露の雨が降り注いだと言い伝えられています。この言葉は「自分がこの世で一番偉い、一番尊い」などの意味で使われることがありますが、決してそのような意味ではありません。誰とも比べることのできない大切な命を頂いていることを喜ばせていだだく言葉です。

私たちは一人で生きているのではなく、親をはじめご先祖の方々、また、たくさんの命の関わりの中で生まれ、たくさんの命に支えられながら生かさせていただいています。その関わりが一つでもかけてしまうと存在することができないかけがえのない命を頂いているのです。この関わり合いを仏教では「因縁生起」と言い、お釈迦様の大切な教えの一つです。

しかし、その縁に気づくことができず、自分がいるのが当たり前！自分さえ良ければいい！と自分のものさしだけで物事をとらえてしまい、なかなか周りに目を向けることができない。これが私の姿ではないでしょうか。そんな私たちにお釈迦様は「他人と自分を比べるのではなくひとりひとりの素晴らしさを認め合うことが大事ですよ」それこそが「唯我独尊ですよ」と大切なことに気づかせてくださいます。

仏縁に出遇い仏さまの呼び声を聞かせていただき、すべてのものがみな平等に抱かれていることを知ることによって自分中心になりがちな私の姿を見つめ直し、改めて生まれさせていただいたこの命を喜べるのではないでしょうか。

「天上天下唯我独尊」花まつりのご縁をとおしてそのお言葉をじっくり味わってみましょう。

Thoughts on Kanbutsu-e

Kanbutsu-e is an important event that celebrates the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha.
According to the legend, when Shakamuni was born, he immediately took seven steps and said
"throughout heaven and earth, I alone am the honored one" and that honeydew rained from the sky.
These words mean, "There is only one of my life in heaven and earth.
Life is irreplaceable and precious.
To say my life is precious means all the other lives are equally precious.
My life as a being that is irreplaceable is precious unconditionally.
It is not something that you can say is more or less precious compared to the others.
People can not help themselves but compare themselves to the others.
They often feel envious of the others.
Sometimes they think they are worthless beings.
Please reflect on your self. You can definitely find good qualities in yourself.
You realize your incomparable precious life is here and now.
No one is living by ourselves.
Our lives are supported by our parents and the ancestors and also by many other lives with our relationships with them.
When even just one piece of those relationships is missing, you wouldn't be here.
Please acknowledge that our precious lives are given to us by our ancestors.
In Buddhism, this is called depending arising and is one of the important teachings of Shakyamuni.
