お彼岸とは､太陽の沈んでゆく方角､いのち終へ生まれ往く世界

一言でお浄土と言いましても実は沢山あって、仏はそれぞれ ご自身のお浄土をお持ちで、その中でも「彼岸」と呼ばれる極楽浄土が西の彼方にあり、ご主人は阿弥陀様であるとお経に説かれてあります。「お経」とは仏となられたお釈迦様のお説教を文章として残されたもので、仏の言葉には嘘はなく、仏教徒としての第一歩は,仏の教えを信頼することだと言われています。ですから、極楽浄土が西の彼方にあるということを科学的知識のない先人の見方だと考えてしまうのでは、お釈迦様の言葉を信頼していないことになります。そうではなく、お浄土が西の彼方にあると説くことによって、お釈迦様は私達に何を明らかにされたのかを考えることが重要です。

東西南北というのは地球上での方角であり、飛行機で西の方角へ飛び続けても元の場所へ戻ってくるだけでお浄土に到着することはできません。では、地球上ではなく西の空の彼方だと考えたとしても、日本から見ての西の空と、ブラジルから見ての西の空とは真反対です。しかも地球は自転しているのですから、西という方角は刻々と変わり、十二時間で真反対の方角になり、こんなことをいくら考えても答えは出てきません。つまり、頭で知っている知識に基づくのではなく、私達がどのように想い感じているのかが大切なのです。「太陽は朝になると東の空に昇り、夕方になると西の空に沈んでゆく」これが私達の感じ方なのです。

私達の想いを地球の自転にあてはめますと、太陽は東から生まれてきて成長し、だんだん力強くなり、そして老化して弱ってゆき西の空に沈むという死を迎えます。ですから私達がこの世の命終へてゆく西の方角に、ふたたび生まれ往く阿弥陀様の世界があるというのが西方極楽浄土の教えだと言えましょう。

お彼岸のお参りを、西方極楽浄土の阿弥陀様に感謝をささげ、今日の自分をお育て下さったご先祖の方々に思いをはせる機縁としたいものです。 《 本願寺新報より 》

Haru Higan-e (Spring Equinox Service)

Higan is where the sun sets and where our lives are renewed at the end.
There actually many Pure Lands and each Buddha has their own Pure Land.
It is stated in the Buddhist chant, the Pure Land called Higan is in the direction of west and belongs to Shakamuni Buddha.
It is thought that the Pure Land of Amida Buddha (the pure land ruled by Amida Nyorai or Amitabha Tathagata) exists off in the distance in the west (it is also called the Western Pure Land)
Okyo (Buddhist chant) is the Teaching of Shakamuni who became Buddha in a written form.
It states the first step to be a Buddhist is to trust the Teaching of Buddha.
To say the Teaching that the Pure Land is in the west is unscientific thinking of the olden days means you are not trusting Shakamuni Buddha.
Instead, it is important to think about what Shakamuni Buddha was trying to show us by saying the Pure Land is in the west.
East West South and North are the directions on earth.
If you continually fly in the westerly direction, you will come back to the same position and can not reach the Pure Land.
If you were to think of it in the sky in the west, the westerly skies of Japan and Brazil are opposites.
Also, Earth is spinning, so what we think of as west is changing constantly and in 12 hours move to the opposite side.
We can not get an answer this way.
It is important how we think and feel rather than try to intellectually analyze.
The Sun rises from the east in the morning and sets in the west in the evening.
This is how we perceive passing of a day.
If we are to apply this perception to the spinning of the earth, the sun is born out of the east, gradually grows strong and becomes weak and old before dying by sinking in the west.
Thus when our lives end, the Pure Land where we are reborn awaits in the west.
At this time of Higan, tet us thank Amida Buddha of the Western Pure Land and think of our ancestors whose lives led us to where we are today.
