「たまたま」をよろこぶ

親鸞聖人は９歳から２９歳までを比叡山で過ごされ、下山し京都で法然聖人のお弟子となられ、再び比叡山に戻られることなく９０歳で往生されました。比叡山を下りて法然聖人のもとへ向かわれたことは、当時の仏教会としては衝撃的なことでした。比叡山で２０年間も修行し立派な僧侶となられた親鸞聖人が、その立場を捨ててまでしたことが重要な意味を持つからでしょう。ところが親鸞聖人ご自身は、この行動を「たまたま」であったといただかれています。「たまたま」法然聖人に出遇われ、「たまたま」阿弥陀様の教えに帰依し、「たまたま」人として生まれ、「たまたま」比叡山で修行するという青年期を過ごされ、「たまたま」２９歳の頃に比叡山から京都の六角堂に１００日間通うということがあり、「たまたま」夢のお告げで法然聖人のもとを尋ねることとなった。この親鸞聖人が阿弥陀様との出遇いを「たまたま」であると語って下さったことこそ感謝すべきなのです。親鸞聖人が「他力本願」(お念仏)との出遇いを「たまたま」と言われたのは、すべてが阿弥陀様のお導きだとよろこばれたからでしょう。

親鸞聖人は理屈で語れば色々と推測できる人生の遍歴を、阿弥陀様のお導きの中であったと言われ、そのお言葉こそが、私達が今ここでお念仏のみ教えをよろこぶことのできる、最初のきっかけであったのです。「たまたま」とは、阿弥陀様が私達を人として生を受けさせ、いつしかお念仏申す仏教徒に育て上げて、お念仏を申す中に命を終え往生させて下さるということなのです。

そこには、喜怒哀楽を繰り返しながらも、人生において一切の出来事を阿弥陀様のお育てとよろこび、出遇いすれ違う、すべての人々を仏様の化身と尊ばせていただく、そんな浄土真宗門徒としての有難い生き様があるのです。

To meet the Teaching of Amida Buddha by chance

Shinran Shonin was born in 1173 in Kyoto. He resided at Hieizan Enryakuji Temple from the age of 9 to 29. Hieizan Enryakuji was also like an educational institution.

It was the time of great changes with the political powers being shifted from the nobilities of the court to the warriors.There were also frequent occurrences of natural disasters and the commoners were fearing that it was the end of the world.

No matter how much Shinran studied Buddhism, what he saw was that he was not able to save the masses by himself.

In 1201, at the age of 29 years, Shinran terminated his training of 20 years at Hieizan and moved to Kyoto to be saved with the masses.It was a shocking thing for Shinran, who was formally admitted as priest to leave the position at the time.

Shinran explained his action as "a chance occurrence".He met Honen Shonin by chance, came across the Amida Buddha's Teaching by chance, was born a human being by chance, trained at Hieizan as a young man by chance, retreated for 100 days at Kyoto “Rokkakudo” ＊at the age of 29 by chance, and to visit Honen Shonin as was directed to in his dream.

＊Rokkaku-do (aka Choboji Temple) is an urban Buddhist temple located just south of Karasuma-Oike Station in the center of Kyoto. Rokkaku-do is famous as the birthplace of ikebana flower arrangement in Japan, ikebana being one of the arts and crafts of Kyoto.
