柔らかきは 強きなり

水には柔軟性があります。四角の容器に注げば四角の形になるし、丸い容器に注げば丸い形にもなります。また一方で水には強さもあります。たとえば川の水、上流の方の石は大きくてゴツゴツしており、下流に行けばいくほど石は小さく丸い形になっていきます。川の水は長い年月をかけてあんなに大きな石の角をとって丸く変えていく力があるのです。

他にも、松の木などは硬いものですが、それゆえに台風の時など強風にあおられ倒れたり折れたりします。ところが、しなやかな笹などはあまり折れたりすることがありません。まさしく柔軟性をもつものが、硬直なものより強いということを表しています。

『イソップ物語』の中に、私の好きな「北風と太陽」という話があります。旅人の着ているマントを脱がせることが出来るのはどちらかと、北風と太陽が競争をします。北風は強い風でもってマントを脱がそうと試みますが、かえって旅人はしっかりとつかまえて放しません。一方、太陽は柔らかく暖かい日差しを浴びさせ、とうとう旅人はマントを脱いだというお話、ここでもそうですね。

現代は特に強さが求められます。強くなければ生きられないなどといいますが、強さには必ずもろさがともないます。したがいまして、私たちが自然に生きていく上では、やはり【柔らかなる心】が大切でありましょう。

阿弥陀さまの願いの中に「触光柔軟(そっこうにゅうなん)」という願いがあります。仏さまの智慧をいただいたならば、身も心も柔らかになるということ。み教えにふれて、真の強さを秘めた柔らかき人間でありたいものです。

Gentle in appearance, but sturdy in spirit

Water has fluidity.　Pour it into a square container and it becomes square and in a round container, round.　Also, water has strength.

For example, river rocks are large and has edges in the upper stream. More further down the stream you go the rocks become smaller and rounder.Water in the river has the strength to take away the edges to round big boulders over time.

Pine trees are hard, but it is because they are strong, they fall or snap by strong winds during typhoons.On the other hand, bamboo grass are flexible and do not break much.It shows that flexible things are stronger than the hard.

In Aesop*s Fables, there is my favorite story called the North Wind and the Sun. The north wind and the sun compete over who can make a traveler take his mantle off first.When the north wind tries to take the mantle off by blowing strong winds, the traveller holds on to it harder.The sun shone warm light and the traveler took off his mantle.

In order to survive in the modern society, strength is sought.They say you need to be strong to live, but strength always has its weakness.For us to live naturally, it is important to have *the soft heart*.Let us be flexible people with the true strength in our hearts.
