いのちをいただく

わたしは知香。小学3年生の女の子です。みんな、お肉料理は好きですか? きらいな人もいるかもしれないけど、わたしは大好き。いつもは食べられないけど。特に牛肉は、ステーキ、すき焼き、焼肉、ハヤシライス、肉じゃがなんてのもおいしいよね。

これまで、お肉をどのくらい食べたんだろうって、友だちの翼君に聞いたら、両手をひろげ、丸きな山をつくって、じまんしてた。わたしは、そんなにたくさんのお肉は食べてないと思ったの。

この前、子ども会があって、このことをお寺の先生に話したら、「知香ちゃんと翼ちゃんは、これまでに食べてきたお肉を《量》で考えたんだね。でもね、もっと大切な事があるんだよ。たとえば、牛肉をつかった料理のお肉って、もとは『いのち』をもって生きていた牛なんだよね。」

「先生、それは知っているよ。」「牛のお肉を食べたということは、牛の「いのち」を食べたことになるんじゃあないかな。しかも、牛だけじゃなくて、ぶたや鳥や魚。ほかにもおち』をもった生きものなんだよね。私たちは、これまでに、数えきれないほど『多くのいのち』を食べて、生きてきたんだね。」

先生の話を聞いて、今日から、ごはんを食べるときは『多くのいのち』のことを思い、手を合わせようと思いました。

〔食後のことば〕●尊いおめぐみをおいしくいただき、ますます御恩報謝につとめます。米、やさい、くだものなど、食べているけど、みんなもとは『いの○おかげで、ごちそうさまでした。

We have been eating countless lives for us to live

My name is Chika. I'm in year 3 of a primary school.
Do you like meat dishes?
I love them.
Especially beef steak, sukiyaki, yakiniku, hayashi rice and nikujaga (meat and potato dish) are delicious.

I was talking to my friend Tsubasa and we wondered how much meat we have eaten so far.
He spread both his arms wide and boasted "this much".
Have we really eaten that much meat?

We were recently at a children's circle and told our teacher about it.
She said "Chika and Tsubasa thought about how much meat in volume you have eaten, but there is something more important to think about.
For all the beef dishes you have eaten, they were all cows that were alive.

Chika: I knew that teacher.
Teacher: To eat a cow's meat means you have eaten the lives of the cows.
You haven't just eaten cows, you've eaten pigs, birds and fish.
We have been eating countless lives for us to live.

When I heard my teacher talk about this, I decided that from now on, I will think about the lives of many at meal times and to be grateful to them.
Words before meals: We are blessed with this meal that were livings things. We eat this meal with deep gratitude.
Words after meals: We are grateful for the delicious meal. We understand we have been given the lives of others.
