恵信尼(えしんに)さま�B 「信心を語り合う親子」

現代は家族が揃って一つ屋根の下で暮らすことが難しい状況になっています。学業や仕事などで遠隔地に別れて、それぞれの場所で生活を営んでいます。そのため、大切な身近な方の臨終の場に立ち会うことができないことも珍しくありません。このような時、肉親なら「苦しむことなく、安らかな最期を迎えられたのだろうか」と想い悩みます。しかし同時に「往生成仏は間違いなかったのだろうか」という想いに至ることは少ないように見受けられます。
時代も条件も全く違いますが、親鸞聖人の晩年は京都、ご内室の恵信尼さまは越後（新潟県）で別々にお住いでした。親鸞聖人の身辺のお世話をされていたのは末娘の覚信尼さまでした。ご臨終前の親鸞聖人は、世間のことなどは一切口になさらず、ただ阿弥陀さまの広大なご恩徳のありがたさと、お念仏を称えることだけでした。そして静かにご往生を遂げられました。
しかし、覚信尼さまは一つの疑問を持たれたようです。それは当時、極楽往生する時に妙なる音が聞こえるとか、西方の空に紫の雲がたなびくというようなことが世間では言われていたのです。今、父である親鸞聖人がご往生されたのに、そのような現象が何一つなかったのです。このことを不思議に思って母の恵信尼さまにお手紙で尋ねられたようです。この疑問に対して恵信尼さまは、親鸞聖人とご一緒に阿弥陀さまのご本願を信じ、お念仏とともに歩まれた折々の出来事を振り返り、「あなたの父・親鸞聖人のご往生は間違いありませんよ」とご往生の確かさを返信されています。このお手紙を通して、�@恵信尼さまご自身の信心の確かさ、�A信心で結ばれた夫・親鸞聖人への厚い信頼、�B母として、娘・覚信尼さまに信心の大切さをお伝えしようとする慈愛の温かさ、などがうかがえます。

These days, it is rare for all the family members to live under the same roof or even in the same district.Separated by studies or work, they live in far away places.As a result, they sometimes cannot be present when their loved ones pass away.
At such times, a family member would wonder with anguish if the deceased managed to pass away in comfort, without pain.The time and the conditions differ, but in his late years, Shinran Shonin lived away from his wife in Kyoto while Nun Eshinni lived in Echigo(Niigata pref.).It was Kakushinni, the youngest daughter who looked after Shinran Shonin.Before he passed away, Shinran did not at all talk about mundane things and talked only of the benevolence of Buddha and recited nembutsu. He passed away quietly.Kakushinni had one question.
At the time, it was said that when a person dies a peaceful death, a sweet tune can be heard or the purple clouds spread to the East.When Shinran, a high priest passed away, no such phenomenon occurred.
Kakushinni thought that was strange and wrote to her mother Eshinni about it.
In answer to this question, Eshinni reflected on the life she led with Shinran trusting in the primal vow of Buddha reciting nembutsu and answered "There is no question in my mind that your father Shinran passed away peaceful and is now in Pure Land."
From this letter, we can see Eshinni's strong faith, her trust in Shinran, and her warmth and concern in her attempt to teach her daughter Kakushinni, the importance of faith.
