恵信尼さま〜恵信尼さまと親鸞聖人�A〜

親鸞聖人の妻、恵信尼（えしんに)さまのお手紙である「恵信尼文書(もんじょ)」の中の四通からは、在りし日の親鸞聖人のご様子をうかがうことができます。
親鸞聖人の晩年は、末娘である覚信尼(かくしんに)さまとそのご姉弟、そして数名の門弟の方々との生活であられたようで、妻である恵信尼さまとは離れ離れのお暮らしだったようです。お手紙の内容から、「恵信尼文書」は娘である覚信尼さまから届いたお手紙の返信のようです。親鸞聖人の最期を看取られた覚信尼さまが、親鸞聖人が往生されたことや、葬儀・火葬を済ませたことを恵信尼さまにご連絡され、ご返信には「聖人が浄土に往生なさったことについてはあらためて申し上げることはありません」と来るべき時が来たと受け止められ、親鸞聖人がお浄土へ間違いなく往生されていることを娘に向かって諭しておられるかのようでした。
恵信尼さまからご覧になった若き日の親鸞聖人は、真剣に道を求める「素晴らしき求道者(ぐどうしゃ)」であったことでしょう。その求道は、善悪賢愚(けんぐ)のへだて無くすべての人が救われていく仏道でした。その仏道は、そのまま子を育て家庭生活を営む恵信尼さまも歩むことのできる仏道だったのです。
現代に伝わっている恵信尼さまの肖像は、「被(かず)衣物(きもの)」という、頭を布で包んでいる尼僧のお姿です。当時の尼僧は、肩もしくは背の中程まで垂らしたところで髪を切りそろえる「尼削(あまそ)ぎ」にしておくことが多かったようです。いつ髪を落とされたかは不明ですが、浄土真宗のお法(みのり)に出遇われて、生活そのものが仏道であったので、夫である親鸞聖人を師と仰ぎ、子や孫の世話をするそのままが、阿弥陀さまから与えられる往生浄土への道でもあったのです。
お念仏のみ教えと共に歩まれた親鸞聖人と恵信尼さまのご遺徳を仰がせていただきましょう 。

Nun Eshinni “Lady Eshinni” and Shinran Shonin (2)

From the 4 letters written by Nun Eshinni, the wife of Shinran Shonin, it is possible to get glimpse of the way Shinran lived.It appears, Shinran Shonin lived with Nun Kakushinni, the youngest daughter and other siblings as well as numerous disciples in his late years away from his wife Nun Eshinni.Judging from the contents, the Eshinni letters appear to be the replies to the letters she received from Kakushinni.After being notified by Kakushinni, of the passing away of Shinran Shonin, and how the funeral and the cremation were conducted, Eshinni replied "The time has come. Shinran Shonin is in the Pure Land in his death."
From Eshinni's point of view, Shinran must have been a great young monk who was earnest in his search for the way of Buddha.He was searching to help all people without prejudice.His way of Buddhism was something that Eshinni could also take whilst raising children and running a home.
The portrait of Eshinni we have today is of a nun with her head wrapped in cloth.
At the time, most of the nuns had her hair down to the shoulders or middle of her back and cut straight.
Eshinni came across the teachings of Jodo Shinshu and made her everyday life as the way of Buddha. She regarded her husband Shinran as her teacher and looked after her children and grandchildren.
Let us look up to the teachings of Shinran and Eshinni, who walked with nembutsu.
