恵信尼(えしんに)さま �@　恵信尼さまと親鸞聖人

親鸞聖人の妻であった恵信尼さま。恵信尼さまのお手紙が本願寺の宝物庫から偶然、発見されたことによって親鸞聖人が歴史上の人物であったことが明らかになりました。
恵信尼さまがご覧になられた親鸞さまのお姿は、恵信尼さまのお手紙を通して今でも私たちの眼前に生き生きとあらわれてきます。この恵信尼さまのお手紙は「恵信尼文書(もんじょ)」あるいは「恵信尼消息(しょうそく)」といわれ、親鸞聖人の伝記研究において、欠かすことのできない大切な資料なのです。
お手紙は十通あり、いずれも末娘である覚(かく)信(しん)尼(に)さまにあてたものです。聖人ご在世のおりにしたためられたもの二通、聖人ご往生の後のもの四通、恵信尼さまご自身の生活に及ぶものが四通です。
恵信尼さまが聖人を「殿」と呼ばれていたことや、お子さまやお孫さまのこと、小袖をいただいてうれしかったことや老いの現状など、実生活のご様子も読み取ることができます。　　
このようにお手紙の全体から、在りし日の聖人がご家族とともに苦楽を共にしながら生活を営まれていたご様子をうかがい知ることができるのです。
出家した僧侶が妻をめとらない生き方が当たり前であった時代に、聖人が恵信尼さまと過ごされたという事実は、浄土真宗が在家の救いであるという真実を私たちに知らしめて下さいます。
昨年は恵信尼さまの750回忌に当たります。福住寺では本年6月に、恵信尼さまの750回忌と併せて、仏教婦人会創立90周年記念法要を勤修いたします。
お念仏のみ教えを仰ぎ苦悩と共に歩まれました親鸞さまと恵信尼さまに学ばせていただきましょう。

Nun Eshinni (Eshinni sama “Lady Eshinni”) and Shinran Shonin

Towards the end of Meiji era, there was a theory that Shinran did not exist.There were no objective proof from Kamakura period of Shinran Shonin that satisfied historians.At such time, letters written by Nun Eshinni, Shinran Shonin's wife, were found by chance in the archives of Hongwanji and thus proved Shinran Shonin was historical important.
Through the eyes of Nun Eshinni, we can vividly see Shinran Shonin even today.The letters of Nun Eshinni are important document in researching Shinran Shonin's life.There are ten letters which were all written to the youngest daughter Nun Kakushinnyo.
Two of them were written when Shinran Shonin was still alive, four of them shortly after Shonin passed away and the remaining four were written on Shinni's day to day life.
From the letters, it is known that Eshinni called Shinran “tono"* and get a glimpse of their lives such as about the children and grandchildren and thanking for the gifts sent by the daughter.
*Tono : respectful term women used to call men (especially wife, her husband)
At Fukujuji Temple, we are holding Buddhist Women’s Association 90th Memorial Service in conjunction with Nun Eshinni's 750th since her death.
Let us learn from Shinran Shonin and Nun Eshinni who lived with Teaching of Nembutsu.
