お盆にまつわる言葉
「盆」という字を調べると、仏教行事である孟蘭盆会(うらぼんえ)の略という説明や、食器などを載せる平たい器という説明などがあります。これらの言葉は、実は大いに関係があることなのです。
そもそも、夏に営まれる行事であるお盆は、『仏説盂蘭盆経(ぶっせつうらぼんきょう)』というお経に由来します。
――お釈迦さまの弟子の目連尊者( もくれんそんじゃ )は、人一倍孝行心のあつい方でした。この目連尊者が親の恩に報いたいと、神通力( じんずうりき )（超能力的な不思議な力）の目をもって、亡き母の行かれた世界を見ると、母は餓鬼道( がきどう )に堕(お)ち苦しみのまっ只中にあることを知りました。餓鬼道は、食べたくても食べられず、飲みたくても飲まれず、体はやせ細り骨と皮ばかりになる有様。目連尊者はビックリして嘆き悲しみ、お釈迦さまにどうしたら母を救うことができるかを尋ねられます。
すると、お釈迦さまは「修行僧たちが雨季の勉学修行が終わる日、修行僧や苦しみに遭っているもののため精一杯の布施をしなさい。食事や油などを準備し、品々を盆の器に用意して供養するのです。さすれば母も救われるでしょう」と仰せになりました。そして目連尊者がその通りにすると、母は餓鬼道の苦しみからのがれることができたのです。
――このお経のエピソードを起源に、夏の雨季が終わる頃は「盂蘭盆会」として先祖に感謝をする行事となり、食器などを載せる器のことを「お盆」と呼ぶようになったりしたようです。
また、お経の最後に「母が救われたことを知った目連尊者が踊り上がって喜ばれた」ということからも今の「盆踊り」が伝わったとされます。

Thoughts on Urabon-e (Feast of Lanterns)
Bon or Obon are shorts for Urabon-e which is a Buddhist service held from 13th to 16th of August.
This word Urabon-e comes from a Sanskrit word "ullamana".
This service originates in Yulanpen Sutra, a Buddhist scripture.
This ‘Obon’, as well as being a religious event to commemorate the souls of ancestors, has the air of a national holiday, with many people traveling around the country and, for those not aware of Buddhist practices, the Obon around August 15th is just a summer vacation, though most people throughout the country maintain the tradition of visiting family graves.
According to a lore, one of the ten principal disciples of Shakamuni Buddha “Mokuren” by using a supernatural power, went to see his deceased mother in the after word.
He found her in a “Gakido” (world of hungry ghosts) where she suffers eternal hunger.
“Mokuren” begged “Shakamuni Buddha” to save his mother.
“Shakamuni Buddha” said to him "On the last day of “Ango*”（the summer training）, help the trainee monks and the people who are suffering to the best of your abilities.
*Ango: The rainy season（the three from April 15th to July 15th）,when monks stay inside the monastery for mental training such as meditation, study of sutra, and lecture.
By virtue of your deeds, your mother will be saved."
As in this lore in the Sutra, Buddhism teaches to do good in life in order to save the dead.
The Urabon-e of today is a result of combining the tradition of receiving the return of the ancestors' soul for Bon and the Agricultural service that expresses gratitude for the year's harvest.
