Welcome to the "Fukujuji" Web Site

Hello Everyone! My name is "Nagao Koyo", the Head Minister of the temple and the administrator of this Web Site. Fukujuji is situated in Fukuzumi, Toyohira-ku in Sapporo City, Japan.
Hello again to the first time visitors and those who already know Fukujuji.
There would be people who are visiting as they were interested in Buddhist Temples, Buddhism or "Shinran Shonin" * and those who just happened to visit and it turned out to be a temple.
*Shonin: A title given to a priest of high rank; a saint, a holy man.
My guess is that most people visiting would have known about Fukujuji.

Introduction of "Fukujuji" and its History

The predecessor of the present Fukujuji was the preaching station of theHongwanji Branch Temple of Sapporo, which was established in Tsukisamuvillage (present address:1-1-3-1 Fukuzumi Toyohira-ku Sapporo 062-0041)during Meiji 26(1893).
It was a small lecture room of 60 square meters (6m x 10m).
The Hongwanji (Head temple and Headquarters of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji Denomination)sent their priests to work at the station until Meiji 35 (1902) when theReverend "Nagao Taijyun" settled in Tsukisamu village.
Although the Rev. Nagao was the Head Minister of Shikoku "Fukujuji"at the age of 57, he had a passion to propagate Buddhism to Hokkaido, whichwas the new frontier 100 years ago, and support the immigrants of the newland. He gave his post to his eldest son and left for Hokkaido.
Once he arrived in Hokkaido in his new post and after discussing with his followers, he decided to build a temple to give support to the immigrants there. After receiving the wooden carved image of Amida Buddha and the temple's name from the Hongwanji, and given approval from the Hokkaido Government Office, the Rev. Nagao established Fukujuji on June 10, Meiji 35(1902).
Since then, the Rev. Nagao's family line has succeeded the Head Minister'spost.
The present Head Minister, the Rev. Nagao Koyo is the 6th generation.

Surrounding of "Fukujuji"

Alight from a train at "Fukuzumi" subway station of the Toho line, then get out at the Exit 2, you will see a temple. That is "Fukujuji".
The Route 36, linking Sapporo City to Muroran, is one of major nationalhighways in Hokkaido. If you drive taking the Route 36 from the centerof Sapporo to Muroran in twenty minutes, you will see an UFO-like hugebuilding that glitters in silver. This is the Sapporo Dome which was builtas a multi purpose facility and is nicknamed "Hiroba". Hirobameans open space for public. Many of you would remember that the 2002 FIFAWorld Cup Soccer was held here.
"Fukujuji" is situated 600 meters before you reach the SapporoDome on the right hand side of the Route 36.
By taking a right turn off the Route 36 at the corner of the Sapporo domeand continuing on for another 2 kilometers or so, there is "Hitsujigaoka"Lookout which is one of Sapporo's key scenic spots and you can see thecity with a population of 1.8 million people. On a clear day, you can evensee Mount Shokanbetsu in the far distance, which is one of the highestmountains in the western part of Hokkaido.
There are probably no other large cities in Japan where we can see sheepgrazing in a rural environment within twenty minutes from the center ofcity. In the premise there is a statue of Dr. William S. Clark, an Americanwho contributed to the education for the young people who participatedin development works of Hokkaido. He has his left hand at his waist andhis right hand pointing afar towards the city with a caption "Boys,Be Ambitious", and is popular as a tourist photo subject.
Also, another place you must not miss is "Hakko Gakuen" (TechnicalCollege of Agriculture). Perhaps you know that this is where the noted"Genghis Khan-nabe" (grilled lamb and vegetable) originated. The rock garden is worth seeing where the founder of the school, the lateMr. Kuribayashi was collecting rocks from mountains all over Hokkaido.During summer, irises of numerous colors blossom here and Japanese yew,the tree that is said to be two thousand and five hundred years old isalso wonderful.
Two thousand five hundreds years ago was around the time of Sakyamuni'sbirth. We are moved very much to learn the life force energy of the treethat breathed the air at the time of Sakyamuni.
